1558 – Elizabeth I Succeeds to the Throne

She gave her name to the ‘Elizabethan Age’. It was an exciting time in English history. This was the age of William Shakespeare’s plays and Francis Drake’s voyages.

Elizabeth is said to have spent a great deal of her childhood in Essex.

As Queen she visited many places such as Maldon, Colchester, Harwich, Saffron Walden and Chelmsford.

Elizabeth reigns for 45 years until her death in 1603.
