1648 – The Siege of Colchester – English Civil War

During the English Civil War of 1642-1651 Royalist forces loyal to King Charles I were besieged in Colchester by the Parliamentarian army under General Fairfax. The siege lasted several months and Fairfax refused to allow food into the town so the inhabitants were forced to eat soap and candles.

The Royalists lost the Siege and later the war causing King Charles I to be executed and England to become a Republic until 1660.
